Why it’s so important to “Eat Your Greens”

How often as children are we reminded at the dinner table to “Eat Your Greens!” quickly followed by “They’re good for you!” And more often than not we turn up our noses in distaste replying “But, do we have to.....” However, when it comes to optimising our health the many benefits that can be obtained from the inclusion of Green Foods into our diets should not be overlooked.

A diet lacking in fresh whole foods consisting mainly of convenience foods with little nutritional value is unbalanced, to achieve a balanced diet it is important to eat whole foods and especially Green foods which will alkalise, cleanse and re balance a body that has become too acidic from over consumption of too many, sugary, fatty processed foods leading to numerous health problems.

Natures Greens such as fruit and vegetables are amongst the most nutrient rich foods in the world providing a wide range of vitamins and minerals. These foods also add fibre to your diet which is known to help in the prevention of numerous diseases. So what are the top greens to add to your diet?

Try including Broccoli, Kale, Spinach, Watercress, Swiss Chard, Kiwi, Avocado, celery and green cabbage to your diet regularly to obtain essential nutrients such as Iron, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium,Vitamins A,C and folic acid. There are lots of tasty recipes available that use these foods, not only can they be used as a side dish with your meals but also in vegetable Juices & smoothies and during the winter – soups and casseroles. So next time you visit your local supermarket don’t by pass the Fresh produce aisle, have a look to see what’s available and try something healthy & different. Provide your body with the nutritious foods it needs to keep you on top form!

But what if you’re always on the go and need a quick way to increase your intake of Green Superfoods? Another way of getting your greens and still obtaining the benefits is to take Green Supplements like Chlorella or Spirulina. Chlorella is a type of green algae grown in fresh water whilst Spirulina is a type of Blue-Green Algae grown in Saltwater lakes. One of the main traits of Spirulina is its high protein content,50 -70% protein by weight & contains all the amino acids essential to the body whilst also being highly digestible & efficiently used by the body. It is one of the most nutrient packed foods on the planet and more and more people are now choosing to include it in their daily diet. Not only is it renowned for its high protein content but also includes B Vitamins, especially B12  (it has four times the B12 as raw liver!), Vitamin K, Iodine & minerals such as Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, potassium & zinc, Essential Fatty Acids and is one of the best known sources of GLA.

Research into spirulina is well documented and highlights its potential in the prevention and treatment of many health conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke, reduction in arthritic symptoms, strengthening Immune defences, nutritional deficiencies such as anaemia, Supporting Liver Health and decreased damage from heavy metal exposure.
Chlorella, has many similarities to Spirulina and again offers many health benefits. It is a single cell green algae, discovered at the end of the 19th Century when it was named after “Chlor” which means “Green” in Greek and “Ella” which means “a small thing” in Latin. Chlorella is a nutrient rich whole food with a concentration of nutritional components such as vitamins & antioxidants including beta carotene, iron, chlorophyll, B12, Vitamin D, Folic Acid, Nucleic Acids & Chlorella Growth Factor. Like Spirulina, Chlorella is one of the most scientifically researched foods and has many health benefits. It is claimed that thousands of people in Japan incorporate Chlorella into their daily diet. In comparison to Spirulina it contains 5X more chlorophyll, the green pigment found in plants. It has been known to aid health by helping probiotic growth, it is great for digestive health with lots of IBS sufferers finding benefit from taking it. Fantastic for energy levels and great for sports as the body utilises the nutrients easily. It’s wonderful for the Skin too – it alkalises the system so that skin issues that are related to digestive problems can be helped and finally – its balancing, suitable for virtually everyone, aids weight management, skin, energy levels, digestion and is a gentle detox.

Need a New Year Resolution Boost?

It’s that time of year again, when the best intended New Years’ resolutions start to waver!

We all start the New Year with a determined attitude to do something different, lose weight, get fit, stop smoking etc.  Yet, after a month of cold, wet, snowy weather, dark nights and not much lighter days, that resolve may be fading and ‘New Year, New Start’ doesn’t quite inspire you in the same way.
Well, here are a few tips to get you back on track:

Revisit your original resolution    – Is it realistic?
For instance, resolving to never eat chocolate again even though it’s your favourite food could be difficult to stick to. Instead opt for something more achievable, such as only having one small bar a week.

Stay Positive and Be Your Own Best Supporter
                                – If you have a lapse it doesn't mean you've failed, focus on what you have achieved so far, notice the successes, however small.  Encourage yourself and do your best each day.

Get Plenty of Sleep                        – if you are sleep deprived, your resolve will not be as strong and you won’t have as much energy to stay motivated

Stick With It!                                     - It takes approximately 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and about 6 months for it to become part of your personality.

Remember a resolution can be made at any time of year so if you feel you have lost momentum, just start again!

Homeopathy - Remedy of the week

I am Jane Bowdenleigh and one of the homeopaths with clinics at the wonderful Bare Health in Congleton town centre.  Mel has asked me to post a regular feature, ‘Remedy of the week’.  So here is our start for January - Rhus Tox

How does the cold, icy weather of winter affect you?  It can affect us all in different ways.  Some people suffer from cold sores; others get run down with mouth ulcers; while for some snow and ice can lead to slips and sprains.  One homeopathic remedy that can help to relieve all that and more is Rhus Tox.

If cold sores are your problem then Rhus Tox is the number one remedy to consider.  At the first signs of itching or tingling around the mouth take Rhus Tox 6c three times a day and continue until the symptoms subside.  Many find this stops the cold sore developing.
Rhus Tox is a plant remedy commonly known as poison ivy.  In 1798 a French Doctor suffered an accidental poisoning from the juices of the plant and found it cured a rash (herpetic eruption) on his wrist that he had had for some time.  He went on to successfully treat a variety of skin eruptions in others.

It has been used as a remedy, in safe homeopathic doses for over 100 years.  Treating like with like symptoms, it is also used for chicken pox and shingles.  A key symptom for Rhus Tox is a great restlessness of mind and body and severe itching.  Patients get some relief from restless movement and typically the blisters will be small with clear fluid. Think of Rhus Tox when symptoms are worse for cold and better for heat and movement.  For example warm applications will always give some relief to a chicken pox/shingles rash that responds to Rhus Tox while the patient feels worse from putting a cold compress on the skin.

It is also used for joint sprains, which are stiff and painful and feel better for movement.  Consider too for rheumatic pain when joints are stiff and aching and worse in cold, damp weather or getting wet.  If the person feels better with slow movement or changing position and better for applying some heat or in hot, dry weather, Rhus Tox is a remedy that can bring some real relief.

Take the remedy in 6c or 30c potency, 2 to 3 times a day while symptoms persist.  Reduce the dose with improvement and stop when symptoms have gone.  There are lots of ways Rhus Tox can bring acute help in the winter months.  Always remember, if symptoms do not improve after several days to a week, contact your local homeopath or Bare Health consultant for advice.

If you have any acute remedies you would like to see included do let me know.  Or if you would like some acute advice or have a query about homeopathy I will be providing free ‘face to face’ opportunities in Bare Health on the second Saturday of each month, starting in February.  See you there.
